However, while it's a relief to see it finally come to the States and Canada, there's also a feeling of "it's about damn time." Japan got WE 8: Live Wire last year, which remixed the top-selling game to give Japanese players online capabilities. With Winning Eleven 9, the series finally comes to PS2 online and Xbox Live in North America. After the success of WE 8, which marked the pinnacle of the franchise and the series debut on Xbox, where could Konami possibly go with the franchise? Online, that's where. Considering the state of sports games today and the cutthroat way that rival American companies have been snatching up exclusivity, it seems as though there are only a few rivalries left that take prominent stage in the hearts of sports gamers everywhere. Adding a few extra leagues, such as the Mexican league, certainly didn't hurt FIFA either. EA's FIFA series has always had an edge over it sales-wise, be it through shrewd marketing (remember the EA Sports Bio that encouraged people to snatch up as many 2004 season games as possible?) or exclusive licenses, most people on this continent tend to pick EA's more mainstream-friendly title over Konami's cult favorite. For North Americans, Konami's Winning Eleven franchise has been an underdog of sorts.
